When you reach the 1st observation area on the
way down the Island Trail you will see these ruins across the canyon to
the South West - Heavily damaged. |
 |
Looking to the East, up the Walnut Creek Canyon |
 |
When ever I pass a sign that say's "Area
Closed", I figure there is something special being hidden. In
this case there is a large set of ruins below and to the right of the
Visitor Center, just before crossing the land bridge to the
"island". |
 |
Even with the walls blown out, the rooms are
quite dark, which proves to be a sever challenge for the camera, even with
the flash. |
 |
Several rooms were squeezed under an over
hang. Our path takes us right up to them as we pass. |
 |
I was intrigued by this interior door.
Some rich guy owned a two room ruin! |
 |
At the southern most end of the loop this large
over hang protected a number of rooms - this is the East end of the row. |
 |
This is the West end of the row - Look at the
systematic destruction used to "open" up the walls to allow more
light in for the looters. |
 |
Completing the loop, looking East, there are
three ruins on the far side of the canyon. They do not appear to
have been ravaged as much as the ones on the "island". |
 |
I was busy climbing 240 stairs, I didn't count
them but some people did, so the camera was not ready to go when this
large Common Raven soared by - I was surprised this shot "from the
hip" turned out at all - Corvus corax. |
