The Meteor Crater monument is privately owned and is operated under a lease by Meteor Crater Enterprises.  There is a visitor center and museum located on the North rim of the crater.  Guided tours are given along the rim trail.

There are trails down to the floor of the crater but they are closed to the public.  According to the topo map, the elevation at the floor is 5125 ft. and the rim has different elevations at each coordinate; the North rim is the lowest at 5630 ft, the East rim at 5630 ft, the South rim at 5671 and the West rim tops the site at 5675 ft.  The meteor blasted a hole that is over 500 ft deep and approximately 3/4 mile wide at its widest point.

Studies done at this site in Arizona were instrumental in ending the debate concerning the origins of such craters on both the earth and moon and the theory of meteor impacts was confirmed.

Enjoy,
