Colorado Trips

In breaking with tradition, I have not prepared a map for our trips to Colorado.  I have divided the photo album into "State albums" so the scenes can be found by location rather than by trip.  Each album will remain chronological.

This year in June we decided to take a leisurely two day trip up the "back roads"  rather than blasting up the freeways as usual.  We have friends on the Western Slope in Colorado who had told us of their favorite route through Indian country, taking US 191 north to Moab, Utah from Chambers, AZ which is on I-40.  From Moab we decided to drive up the canyon along the Colorado River on Utah 128 - so off we went - it was a great experience.  US191 goes through Chinle, AZ which is the entry point to Canyon de Chilly.  We took a detour over to the Monument to scout the area for a future trip in mid September.  I am really looking forward to a long weekend with my brother and sister-in-law this Sept.

For the June trip, we planned our second day of traveling to include a surprise lunch with our friends living on the Western Slope.  We waited until we were in town to let them know we were coming - as we were driving through town on the freeway we called, gave them our bearings and asked for directions to their new place.  Ms. Trekker was on the phone getting the instructions which were to get off at the next exit, which would be 24th Road.  Only it wasn't, so we continued on past it thinking that 24th Road would be next - it wasn't, soon there were no more exits and we had to go all the way to Palisades before we could turn around.

Coming from Arizona, we were naturally going East but our friend had thought we were going back to Arizona so she had assumed we were headed West.  The instructions were good, the coordination was not.  This going in the wrong direction business was understandable in Spain, but at home it's got to stop.  Anyway, after getting turned around, it was a toss up between me and the car as to which of us had the greatest urgency to visit a gas station the fastest - we had to break off the hunt.  After filling the car and taking care of business, we called again and got back on course - easily finding their new "lodge".  He is into precious stones, fossils, and importing arts and crafts; she covers the waterfront of the sewing/quilting crafts - they are always on the go.  When I said that he is into stones and fossils, I mean that he is in the field, mining and collecting.  I have a couple of pictures of two of the fossils and some of the crafts that he has imported - they are really interesting as well as amazing.

Our friend has had the good fortune to have been invited to work a fossil quarry at Fossil Lake near Kemmerer, Wyo.  I have been fortunate to have been invited to join him there sometime - our schedules didn't work out for this year, so its on my calendar for next year.  I am really looking forward to this new adventure.

Our week in Colorado was too short but duty called so we headed back to Arizona.  Rather than entirely retracing the new route, from Bluff Utah we took a right to go through the Valley of the Gods and past Monument Valley.  Enjoy the pictures - we'll be adding to the album on future trips.
